Coffee Shops in Monteverde

There are a variety of coffee shops in Monteverde that not only serve great coffee but also offer a lovely atmosphere to socialize or steal away to get some reading or work done for a few hours. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite coffee shops in Monteverde.

1. Café Monteverde

  • Hours: Santa Elena location 7 AM to 7 PM; Monteverde location 7 AM to 6 PM
  • Address:
    • Santa Elena Location: Vitosi, Costado Oeste Farmacia, Provincia de Puntarenas, Santa Elena, 60109
    • Monteverde Location: Café Monteverde, Puntarenas Province, Monteverde

One of the most beloved coffee brands in Monteverde, Café Monteverde is a business that sells coffee grown, roasted, and ground all right here in Monteverde. They have two locations, one in downtown Santa Elena, and another further up the road in quieter central Monteverde.

The location in Santa Elena is a great stopping point on your way to the grocery store or buying souvenirs in town. This location also has an upstairs area with plenty of outlets, so I love sitting here if I’d like some quiet time to work on my computer or read a book for a few hours.

Monteverde itself is a more rural offshoot of the busier Santa Elena town and here you can find the second Cafe Monteverde location. I love this shop as a quieter place to have a conversation with friends and feel more immersed in nature.

You can bring your experience at Café Monteverde full circle by directly observing how their in-house coffee is produced by signing up for one of their coffee tours. More details on that below!

2. Orchid Coffee and Restaurant

Orchid Cafe with window outside in monteverde.
  • Hours: 7 AM to 9 PM
  • Address: Orchid Cafe, Puntarenas Province, Monteverde

You can’t miss Orchid Coffee and Restaurant on your way into the Santa Elena town, with its gorgeous two-story building with hanging plants and outdoor seating. Here, they make specialty lattes served with garnishes like coffee beans or sprigs of mint if you’re in the mood for a more upscale experience (try their iced caramel latte and you’ll see what I mean!).

The food at the Orchid Coffee and Restaurant is also delicious. They have a variety of foods to try including classic Costa Rican dishes, or you’ll also find items like French toast or a lox bagel on their menu. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but I found the food to be very tasty!

I love coming to this cafe in the evening for a coffee and a slice of cake. Its wonderful atmosphere is a great place to wind down and enjoy the company of friends before calling it a night.

3. Kaffi

  • Hours: 9 AM to 6 pm
  • Address: Gasolinera de Cerro Plano, Frente a, Provincia de Puntarenas, Monteverde, 61201

This newer coffee shop is just steps away from the Monteverde CPI Language Immersion School, making it a great destination for students to stop between classes for a cup of coffee. They serve specialty coffees and a range of pastries and desserts.

Also, the company advertises hosting coffee brewing and tasting workshops for those who’d like a more hands-on experience. According to their website, they charge $40 per person for a 2-hour class. You can contact them via WhatsApp to set that up (+506 8318 2105).

4. Cafe Capucchino and Restaurant

  • Hours: 6 AM – 9 PM
  • Address: Diagonal Escuela Adventista Puntarenas Santa Elena, Provincia de Puntarenas, Monteverde, 60109

Tucked away behind the main road, you might not find this coffee shop unless you’re looking for it (I live in Monteverde and I didn’t discover it until recently!). That said, this hidden gem is worth a visit on your trip to Monteverde.

They serve delicious specialty coffee, a diverse food menu, and a variety of pastry items. The two-story building also offers an amazing view of the rainforest. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Nicoya peninsula and Pacific Ocean in the distance.
