1. Arenal Volcano
- Height: 1,670 meters (5,479 feet)
- Location: Alajuela province, near La Fortuna

Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most famous volcanoes, was once one of the most active in the world. Though currently in a resting phase, the perfectly conical peak remains an iconic sight (Yep, it’s the one you see all over Instagram).
Visitors can explore Arenal Volcano National Park, which offers a variety of hiking trails that range from easy walks through lava fields to more challenging hikes with panoramic views. Popular activities include hot springs, ziplining tours, and boat rides on Lake Arenal. Be sure to pack sturdy shoes and water for hikes, as trails can be rocky and the weather unpredictable.

2. Poás Volcano
- Height: 2,708 meters (8,885 feet)
- Location: Alajuela province, Poás Volcano National Park
- Last Eruption: 2019
Poás Volcano is easily accessible and famous for its enormous crater, which is one of the largest active craters in the world, filled with a striking turquoise acid lake.
Visitors can drive almost all the way to the summit, and a short paved trail (about 600 meters) leads to an observation deck overlooking the crater. Expect to pay $15 for entry and bring cash for parking.

3. Irazú Volcano

Irazú Volcano is Costa Rica’s highest active volcano and offers breathtaking views on clear days (key word—clear days), where you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
The volcano has several craters, including one that contains a greenish crater lake. The summit is accessible by road, and once there, you can explore short trails around the craters. Due to the elevation, the temperature at the top can be chilly, so dress in layers.

4. Rincón de la Vieja Volcano
- Height: 1,916 meters (6,286 feet)
- Location: Guanacaste province, Rincón de la Vieja National Park
- Last Eruption: 2021
Rincón de la Vieja is an active volcano located in the rugged landscapes of Guanacaste. It is known for its geothermal activity, including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and hot springs.
The volcano offers an adventurous hiking experience, with several trails of varying lengths that take you through tropical forests, waterfalls, and geothermal fields. The Las Pailas trail is a favorite, showcasing much of the geothermal activity close to the crater.

5. Turrialba Volcano

- Location: Cartago province, near Irazú Volcano
- Last Eruption: 2021
Turrialba Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s more active volcanoes and frequently emits ash and gas. It is close to Irazú Volcano, making it possible to visit both in one trip.
Due to recent eruptions, access to the summit may be restricted, but the surrounding area offers hiking trails that lead through cloud forests with spectacular views. The area is also known for its dairy farms and cheese production.
6. Tenorio Volcano
- Height: 1,916 meters (6,286 feet)
- Location: Guanacaste province, Tenorio Volcano National Park
- Last Eruption: Dormant
Tenorio Volcano is part of Tenorio Volcano National Park, known for its lush rainforests and the stunning Rio Celeste, a river that appears to be painted in a brilliant turquoise color.
While the volcano itself is dormant, the surrounding park is a popular spot for hikers looking to experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica. The main trail leads to Rio Celeste’s waterfall, where the vibrant blue water cascades into a natural pool. It’s without a doubt one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica (if not the entire world).
