What to Pack for Costa Rica

Psst: I’ve created a printable version of this list as well! You can download it at the bottom of this post for an easy Costa Rica packing checklist!

1. Clothing Essentials

Costa Rica’s climate varies significantly depending on the region and time of year, so it’s important to pack versatile clothing.

  • Lightweight, Quick-Dry Shirts: Pack moisture-wicking shirts for hikes and outdoor activities. Synthetic fabrics or merino wool are excellent choices.
  • Hiking Pants: Lightweight and quick drying pants are practical for hiking and exploring, especially in cooler cloud forests. Mosquitos can be bad too, so pants are a bit of a better option than shorts!
  • Shorts: Comfortable, breathable shorts are ideal for beach days and warm-weather hikes.
  • Swimsuits: Bring at least two swimsuits for beach days, waterfall swims, and hot springs.
  • Lightweight Rain Jacket or Poncho: Costa Rica’s rainy season is no joke, and even during the dry season, brief showers are common. A lightweight, packable rain jacket is essential.
  • Long-Sleeve Shirts: For cooler evenings or as sun and mosquito protection during hikes.
  • Sweater or Light Jacket: Nights in the highlands can get chilly, so pack a sweater or fleece jacket.
  • Hiking Socks: Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry during hikes. You won’t regret this one!!
  • Hat: A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap to protect your face from the sun.
  • Sarong or Beach Cover-Up: Ideal for beach days and can also double as a towel or blanket.

2. Footwear

  • Sturdy Hiking Shoes or Boots: If you plan to hike, bring well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots that provide good support and traction.
  • Flip-Flops: Lightweight and easy to pack, great for slipping on at the beach or around your accommodation.
  • Water Shoes: If you plan on exploring rocky beaches or waterfalls, water shoes with good grip are essential. I always love to wear my keen sandals as they can double as hiking and water shoes (for those shorter hikes).

3. Accessories and Gear

  • Daypack: A small, comfortable backpack for day trips, hikes, and excursions. Look for one with a hydration bladder or room for a water bottle.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while being eco-friendly. Consider a water bottle with a built-in filter if you’re spending a lot of time in remote areas.
  • Dry Bag: Perfect for protecting your valuables, electronics, and documents from water, especially during boat tours or rainy days.
  • Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from the strong tropical sun.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Useful for night hikes, camping, or if you’re staying in remote areas with limited lighting.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Costa Rica is incredibly photogenic. Bring a good camera or make sure your smartphone has enough storage for all the photos you’ll take (learn from my mistakes).
  • Binoculars: A must for birdwatchers or wildlife enthusiasts who want to get a closer look at Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity. It’s truly amazing to get an up close view.
  • Travel Towel: A quick-drying travel towel is useful for beach days, swimming, or if you’re staying in hostels.

4. Health and Safety Items

  • Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes can be a nuisance, especially in the rainforest and coastal areas. Bring a DEET-based or natural repellent to protect yourself from bites.
  • Sunscreen: Costa Rica is close to the equator, so the sun is strong. Pack a high-SPF, waterproof sunscreen to protect your skin.
  • After-Sun Lotion: Aloe vera or a similar after-sun product can soothe your skin after a day in the sun.
  • Personal First Aid Kit: Include basics like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, blister treatment, and any prescription medications you need.
  • Anti-Diarrheal Medication: It’s better to be safe than sorry when traveling, especially if you’re trying new foods.
  • Electrolyte Tablets or Packets: Useful for rehydrating after long hikes or hot days in the sun.
  • Hand Sanitizer and Wipes: Keep these handy for cleaning your hands when soap and water aren’t available.
  • Motion Sickness Medication: Again, better safe than sorry!

5. Travel Documents and Money

  • Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
  • Drivers License: You will need a valid drivers license if renting a car!
  • Photocopies of Important Documents: Keep copies of your passport, travel insurance, health insurance, departure ticket, drivers license, and other important documents in a separate bag.
  • Credit and Debit Cards: Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. Inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues.
  • Cash: Costa Rican colón (CRC) is the local currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Carry small bills for tips, taxis, and small purchases.
  • Travel Insurance: Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and adventure activities.

Here are some more logistical tips to know before your first trip to Costa Rica!!

6. Electronics and Tech

  • Universal Travel Adapter: Costa Rica uses Type A and B electrical outlets, the same as in the U.S. If you’re coming from another region, a universal adapter will be necessary.
  • Power Bank: Useful for keeping your phone or camera charged, especially if you’re off the grid for a while.
  • E-Reader or Books: Great for relaxing during downtime or on long bus rides. A must on every single one of my travel lists!!

7. Optional Items

  • Snorkeling Gear: If you plan on snorkeling in the Caribbean or Pacific waters, bringing your own gear can save rental costs.
  • GoPro or Action Camera: Perfect for capturing underwater adventures, zip-lining, or other adrenaline-pumping activities.
  • Yoga Mat: If you practice yoga, a travel-friendly mat can be great for morning sessions on the beach or at your hotel.
  • Guidebooks or Maps: While smartphones are convenient, having a physical guidebook or map can be helpful, especially in areas with limited reception. Or just bookmark our site to have all the tips and itineraries right on your phone 😉

Final Tips

  • Pack Light: Costa Rica’s casual atmosphere means you won’t need fancy clothes. Aim for lightweight, multipurpose items that you can layer.
  • Laundry: Many hotels and hostels offer laundry services, so you can pack fewer clothes and wash them during your trip.
  • Eco-Friendly Products: Costa Rica is known for its commitment to sustainability. Opt for eco-friendly toiletries and reusable items whenever possible to minimize your impact.
